7 Best Sidekicks in Video Games

We all know that a main character plays an important role in deciding whether a game is worth playing or not. Without a likeable main character, some may find it hard to progress further into the game as they don’t resonate with them. That said, the deuteragonist is just as important in video games.

For today’s article, we will be taking a peek at 7 of the best sidekicks that video games have to offer.

Let’s get started!

1. Luigi (Super Mario)

Luigi

Mario has not only been an icon for Nintendo but also for the entire video game industry. Even so, his second, Luigi has been with him all this while and is received well by the fans.

Luigi is so well-received that he has even got some games of his own. The most iconic Luigi title would probably be the Luigi Mansion series which we think is pretty underrated. They are nice breather games from the main series and they also give a lot of love to Nintendo’s favourite sidekick.

Honestly, we don’t think there is another franchise that loves its second protagonist as much as the Mario franchise. We’re not complaining though!

2. Yosuke Hanamura (Persona)

yosuke

Modern Persona games are all about friendship and the connections you make. There’s no NPC that holds that value as much as Yosuke Hanamura from Persona 4.

While being super friendly and kind, Yosuke is someone that is always ready to lend a hand to those that are closest to him. When Teddy was in the real world, he even offered him a place to stay and a job without hesitation. Even for Persona standards, his kindness is off the charts.

Other than friendship, Yosuke is also a romantic of sorts. His infatuation for Saki might be somewhat delusional and one-sided, but his actions were generally sweet. Even after her death, his loyalty to love is unwavering and made sure that her death was not in vain.

3. Atreus (God of War)

atreus

The God of War games is mostly about blood, gore and violence. There are only a few moments where kindness and empathy are shown. Both are present in Kratos’ son, Arteus.

Despite being the son and sidekick of the killer of gods, Atreus is shown to be a loving boy who cares for those around him like animals and strangers. To him, everything seems innocent, even when the environment is as brutal as it gets.

Atreus’ character is amazingly written because we can see the contrast between him and his father, Kratos. Kratos is known for his ruthless and unyielding nature is juxtaposed by his offspring that is brimming with the warmth of light.

4. Ellie (The Last of Us)

ellie

Honestly, Ellie can also be seen as a protagonist rather than a secondary character. She will be around you most of the time and she is the single source of motivation for Joel to drive further.

Playing as the daughter figure Joel, Ellie is the soft spot Joel and is the engine of the plot of the game. Sure, she might not be the most useful when it comes to combat purposes, but Ellie’s role in The Last of Us is a human one that is brimmed with emotions.

5. Elizabeth Comstock (BioShock Infinite)

elizabeth

The ever-bubbly and free-going assistant in BioShock Infinite is truly a breath of fresh air to the game. Witty and fun, Elizabeth is a super enjoyable character that never fails to liven the mood.

Having a huge dislike for violence, Elizabeth is a pacifist by nature and her naivete makes her a person that actually has a kind soul. Plus, her character development is pretty well done and we can see signs of growth in her maturity, making her a complex character, even if she’s a side character.

6. Agro (Shadow of the Colossus)

Shadow of the Colossus is an amazing game and for its time and even today, the game has left behind a legacy that many hope to achieve.

Constantly by the player’s side, Agro is the faithful horse that brings you to places and aids you in many battles. Despite the players’ many dangerous adversaries, this loyal horse will follow until the ends of the earth. Fast and reliable, Agro is the perfect partner and without it, you’ll probably never beat this game!

7. Cortana (Halo)

cortana

Being stranded alone in a foreign environment is scary as heck. You technically have no assistance or help of any kind and that is what happened in Halo. Luckily for us, we do have Cortana to help us and its assistance is more than reliable.

Serving as your AI assistant, Cortana does the job so well that even Microsoft itself named its assistant tool after it. This is a testament to how great Cortana was in the Halo franchise.

And with that, we finally closed the curtains to 7 of the best sidekicks available in the video game industry. We are sure that there are plenty of other characters that fit the bill but these are the few that are at the top of our heads.
