Games have always been a source of entertainment, excitement, and a way to test our skills. While playing against other human opponents can be thrilling, sometimes we crave a challenge that only the toughest artificial intelligence (AI) can provide.
In this article, we’ll explore eight games that are notorious for having some of the hardest AI opponents. So, get ready to push your skills to the limit and embark on these challenging virtual adventures!
1. Dark Souls II

Dark Souls II is renowned for its punishing difficulty, and the AI-controlled enemies in this game are no exception. From relentless bosses to cunning creatures lurking in the dark, the AI in Dark Souls II will test your reflexes, strategic thinking, and patience like no other.

2. Chess

Chess is a classic game that has fascinated players for centuries. While it may seem like a simple board game, the AI opponents in modern chess engines have reached astonishing levels of expertise. They can analyze countless possibilities in seconds and exploit even the slightest mistake, making them formidable opponents for both beginners and seasoned players.
Therefore, even if you are a long-time chess player, any capable Chess AI will punish you. They will always consider and utilise the best course of action. Cumulatively, they will beat you in efficiency, strategy and overall gameplay. A pretty fun way to lose though because you’ll get to see and learn certain strategies and moves are used during specific situations perfectly.
3. XCOM 2

XCOM 2 is a turn-based strategy game where players lead a team of soldiers against an alien invasion. The game’s AI employs adaptive tactics and cunning manoeuvres to outsmart you at every turn. It will force you to think strategically, anticipate enemy moves, and make tough decisions under pressure.
As such, if you are not familiar with turn-based gameplay, you will struggle against its AI. That said, do not give up because it is beatable. Reading up guides and having varying tactics will allow you to play better and handle many different situations.
4. F.E.A.R.

F.E.A.R. or also known as First Encounter Assault Recon is a first-person shooter that features incredibly intelligent enemy AI. The enemies in F.E.A.R. exhibit advanced behaviours such as flanking, taking cover, and coordinating attacks, making every encounter intense and unpredictable.
The improved and unforgiving AI makes F.E.A.R. a much-loved classic for FPS enthusiasts. It provides a challenging challenge that even veterans of the genre will struggle with. We have to admit, newbies might want to skip this game because it is really super-hard. Still, if you are looking for a challenge, this game is perfect.
5. FIFA 23

It is actually kind of weird to have FIFA on this list because we’ve recently done an article centring around easy sports games for beginners and FIFA is on that list. Well, there is a nuance to it. FIFA’s AI can either be really dumb or it can go full Star Trek level.
At its peak—the Ultimate level of difficulty—the AI is practically impossible to defeat. It has the ability to emulate real-life pro-FIFA players and adopt its play style. So, even if you are using the best team and the AI is using the worst, there is a really good chance that you’ll still lose to it. So, if you are a beginner, do not pick the Ultimate difficulty!
6. Super Meat Boy

Super Meat Boy is a fast-paced platformer known for its unforgiving level design. While it may seem like a game designed to test the player’s skills, the AI-controlled replays of other players’ runs can be even more demanding. Trying to beat these AI opponents’ flawless performances requires pixel-perfect precision and lightning-fast reflexes.
In other words, you can assume that you are not playing against an AI but an actual human. Or should we say, a human that makes zero mistakes and is perfect? Although we must say, playing against it can be daunting, once you’ve beaten it, the satisfaction is surreal.
7. Civilization VI

Civilization VI is a turn-based strategy game where players lead a civilization from ancient times to the modern age. The game’s AI opponents are known for their ability to effectively manage resources, plan ahead, and wage wars strategically. They will challenge your diplomatic skills, force you to adapt to changing circumstances, and keep you on your toes throughout the game.
Without an initial plan and even the ability to touch-type (having high APM), you will almost always lose against the AI. This is because the AI is just way too good at being efficient and it will capitalise on any mistakes and lax moments you make. It is a well-oiled machine that will take a very experienced CIV player to have a shot against it.
8. Street Fighter 6

You know something is up when even experienced and veterans of the SF franchise are losing against the AI. It is scary but actually very commendable.
On the highest difficulty level, the AI can almost predict your movements and attacks even before you can execute them. Being able to prepare and counteract everything you do will make it borderline impossible for you to win. So, don’t get too discouraged if you’re consistently failing against the AI—you are certainly not the only one!
