Torment: Tides of Numenera, the spiritual successor to cult classic Planescape: Torment will be making its beta launch in “early” 2016. InXile Entertainment, the studio developing it, posted on their Kickstarted page that the beta access will be available to backers and Steam soon.
Eligible Kickstarter backers will receive access to the beta on January 17th while the Steam Early Access will be available on January 26th for everyone else. Brian Fargo, the founder of InXile Entertainment, posted some details on what players can look forward to in the beta.
“The beta will start you right in the beginning of the game and is quite lengthy for an early beta. It covers the game’s introductory sequence (some of which you may have already seen a portion of in the alpha) as well as most of the first major location of the game, Sagus Cliffs.” He continued, “Sagus is a very old city that was built on top of ancient structures that predate the return of humanity to the Ninth World. It’s split into five main districts: Circus Minor, Cliff’s Edge, Caravanserai, Government Square and the Underbelly. As you might expect from a city location, it is rich in lore to discover, characters to talk with and obviously quests to complete!”
Previously, Kickstarter backers were given alpha access to the game. Based on the feedback from the alpha, InXile Entertainment has made design changes to Torment: Tides of Numenera. Fargo hopes that the beta will serve as a direct feedback as well into the development of the game, stating “Indeed, many points from alpha feedback informed our design decisions during beta production, iteration is after all key to making our games. I look forward to gathering more unique insights from this release.”
The successfully crowd-funded Torment: Tides of Numenera was conceived as the spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment, an isometric RPG beloved by fans when it was released in 1999 for PC. The Kickstart campaign managed to achieve over $4 million in pledges and is currently in development and is planned for “Late” 2016 full game release on PC.
