Blade & Soul has already made it presence in East Asia when it was released four years. Now, with its western release, we dive back into the martial arts epic MMORPG and find out whether Blade & Soul is worth the return trip.

Return Of The Fighter

The arrival of Blade & Soul to the western market has been long awaited by MMORPG fans. Released back in 2012 for South Korea, Blade & Soul made headlines for its use of action combat and blending it with beautiful Chinese inspired martial arts design. It’s 2016 and western players will finally get to step into the arena of Blade & Soul.

Despite being four years old, Blade & Soul is quite a fun game to play. However, the four-year gap between Blade & Soul’s release to western audiences does show its age once you reached the endgame content. Still, the journey there might be worth a trip.

From Student To Master

As soon as you begin creating your character, Blade & Soul truly immerse you in the martial arts-inspired world with fully voiced NPCs and tutorials. From skin tones to hairstyles, the character creation tools for Blade & Soul is definitely for those that wants to create a one-of-a-kind character.

We then get into the gameplay tutorial and prologue which follows a very predictable martial arts storyline. Despite that, the tutorial is very easy to follow and comprehensive enough for you to learn all the basic movements and controls. Once you mastered the basics, it’s time to get into the combat, which is where Blade & Soul really shines.

It’s Time For Kung-Fu Fighting

Blade & Soul combat uses an active combat system that foregoes static action bars, tab-targeting, or auto-focus. Instead, you aim your attacks with your camera and deal damage through combos. The attack command combos can change depending on the situation(i.e. when the enemy is standing or knocked down), which makes battles a hectic but fun affair.

The seven classes offer great variety in terms of fighting styles. Playing as a Blade Dancer will feel different compared to a Destroyer or a Summoner. It’s this addictive and fun battle system and movement that can keep a player invested in the game for long bouts. Which is good because  you can expect to face the same tropes of any other MMORPG in terms of questing once you reached the endgame.

The Journey Continues On

The combat in Blade & Soul may be enough to occupy gamers for a time, but sooner or later, the 2012 designs of the game will begin to show. The game’s quests follow the same old trend of kill, fetch, complete quest, repeat, and after a while, it tends to get pretty tedious.

Mainly, PVE after a certain point becomes a chore, which is a shame considering how great the combat is.

Sure, you can jump into dungeon mode but it’s really just a steady progression of the same old enemies with a final boss. Plus, the lack of social engagement within Blade & Soul makes adventuring quite a lonely experience. Of course, you could just go for PVP. but that requires you to do some intensive grinding before you’re even able to step into the ring.

Conclusion

Blade & Soul offers a fun experience with its deep combat and immersive world. But the beauty will begin to crack once you have to deal with the same fetch quest a hundredth time and having to grind endless just to join in the excellent PVP mode. Hopefully with the upcoming expansions, players can look forward to spending more time in the martial arts fantasy MMORPG.
