One of Square Enix’s classic JRPGs will arrive on Android and iOS devices on May 26. The sequel to Romancing SaGa, which was released in Japan for Super Famicom in 1993, will finally see a western release after 23 years.
In Japan, Romancing SaGa 2 was also re-released for mobile phones and PlayStation Vita in 2011 and 2016 respectively. Localization for the game never happened after the first title did not make an impact with western audiences.
The game was part of a trilogy that released back in the Super Famicom era and achieved considerable success despite being an offbeat series. Here’s the official description for the game:
Romancing SaGa 2 is one of the many titles in the lauded SaGa roleplaying game series. In this popular entry, released for the Super Famicom in Japanese only in 1993 and boasting sales in excess of one million copies, the player’s struggle spans multiple generations as he assumes the role of a series of rulers of the Varennes Empire in a valiant struggle against the Seven Heroes.
A free scenario system—a hallmark of the SaGa series—enables the player to take command of a variety of protagonists along the line of imperial succession and experience the history of a nation as it grows and changes. This freedom of choice provides a compelling narrative that served as the cornerstone of the title’s success on its initial release.
If you’re a looking for JRPG fix on your mobile devices, Romancing SaGa 2 will be right up your alley. Though, be prepared to pay quite a bit as the game will cost $17.99.
