EVE Online Will Transition Into A Free-To-Play Model In November

EVE Online, one of the longest running Sci-Fi MMORPG, is finally going free-to-play, ten years after its release. Announced by developer CCP Games, expect the new free servers to go live in November.

As for the transition will work, CCP outlined that starting in November, EVE Online will have two different “clone states.” The Alpha Clone State will be a basic base state that will allow new players to play around and train in the game’s deep mechanics with a limited skill set. It will also serve as a refresher for returning players as well.

The second state is the Omega Clone State which will basically function the same way as it does for subscribers whereby players will have unlimited access to the game’s skills and other features. Only characters with PLEXed accounts or with a subscription will have access to the Omega Clone State, while unsubscribed players will be relegated to the Alpha State.

In a blog post over at CCP’s site, the developer detailed their vision for transitioning the decade old subscription-based MMORPG into a free-to-play model:

Part of our vision for the future of EVE has included more open access for some time, but with the interconnected nature of the game comes vulnerability. We knew that if the floodgates were opened in the wrong way, we could see anything from server meltdowns to the collapse of the EVE economy. Over time, our hardware has improved, code has been untangled (mostly!) and we’ve found a design we believe in.

If you were hesitant to jump into the deep well of EVE Online, you can now try it out for free to see if interstellar economic trading and space-faring adventures fit you.
