HTC Vive Details Revealed And They Are Pricey

2016 is shaping up to be the year of virtual reality with HTC and Oculus VR sharing the details on their VR headsets. The latter revealing the Oculus Rift for preorder at $600 and was considered expensive by most, that is until HTC revealed the price for their Steam-powered VR headset, the HTC Vive. Be prepared to pay a premium price for a premium VR experience with the HTC Vive at $799(!).

HTC Vive VR Headset

Posted on their official blog, HTC unveiled the Vive Consumer Edition to the public along with details on when the pre-order opens up. A countdown clock reveals that preorders will be available to the public on Monday 29th, 10 A.M Eastern time. However, it won’t be the preorder date that will in be in the mind of VR enthusiasts, rather, it’s the impressive price tag for the Steam-collaborated VR headset.

At $799, the Vive Consumer Edition will come with the Vive headset, two wireless controllers, 360-degree tracking and room scale movement sensors. The headset itself is the latest build with features that they have improved upon from the previous headset.

The Consumer Edition will also integrate phone functionality  which will enable you to “stay connected to the real world, without exiting the virtual world, Vive Phone Services demonstrates the ability to combine both realities without losing touch of either.” While it remains to be unseen how game developers will utilize the phone integration, HTC gave some ideas on it’ll be used on the consumer and business side by allowing you to “receive and respond to both incoming and missed calls, get text messages and send quick replies and check upcoming calendar invites directly through the headset.”

Of course, being a Steam supported device, there will be games coming for the Vive. In fact, HTC will include two “fully-fledged VR experience” for a limited time when you preorder the Vive Consumer Edition.

Job Simulator, by Owlchemy Labs: In a firmly tongue-in-cheek world where robots have replaced all human jobs, step into the ‘Job Simulator’ to learn what it was like ‘to job’.
Fantastic Contraption, by Northway Games in collaboration with Radial Games: Imagine walking around a grassy island floating in the sky, building a machine the size of a horse with your own hands, then watching it roll out in the world.

While games will be a part of the Vive experience, HTC mentioned they will also look into expanding the usage of their VR headset into other sectors such as entertainment, retail, education, design, healthcare, and automotive, to name a few. Oculus Rift, on the other hand, aims to bridge the gap between both experiences while Sony’s VR headset will focus more on gaming.

It remains to be seen whether HTC Vive will make an impact in the virtual reality market as now, they are the most expensive VR peripheral in the market compared to the Oculus Rift. Once Sony reveals their plans and pricing for the Playstation VR, we will then have a better view of the VR market for 2016. Which VR headset will you choose? Let us know in the comments below!
