Is Threads the New Twitter?
Have you tried out the latest trending app – Threads? Threads may be the latest social media trend. It has garnered more than 10 million users at launch. It works similarly like Twitter, where users can share a post up to 500 words, and other users can comment down below it creating a “thread”. Read on to find out more about Threads.
What is Threads and how does it work?
Developed by Instagram, Threads is an app where people can have real-time, public conversations with one another by replying to someone’s thread. Sounds fun? Here’s the catch: Those who wish to use Threads are required to have an account on Instagram. A user’s Instagram handle must also be their Threads user name. It feels more like an extension of Instagram, rather than a standalone app as of now.
How is it different from Twitter?
Threads is in many ways similar to Twitter, in fact Twitter is threatening to sue Meta over “systematic, willful and unlawful misappropriation” of Twitter’s trade secrets and IP. So back to the topic, users can post mostly text-based messages to a scrolling feed, where people who follow them and whom they follow can reply. People can also post photos or videos on the app.
Here’s where they differ: Threads does not currently support direct messaging, a feature that Twitter offers but Instagram said it may add features to Threads if new users ask for them.
The Zuckerberg-Musk fight is on
Their rivalry was already made well-known on social media, but now it is official. Given the shaky management history of Twitter, Meta’s move with Threads could give it an edge by utilizing its existing Instagram user base and advertising tools.
