Konami Closes Down Former Kojima Productions LA Studio

Ever since the rumors of Hideo Kojima’s departure and “supposedly” farewell party, Konami seems intent to erase any and all things related to Kojima himself. And recently, tweets from 3D Realms co-founder George Broussard seems to indicate that Konami is closing their Los Angeles Studio, which was the former Kojima Productions LA studio.

Turns out it’s true. It seems that in an effort to shift towards a new focus on other areas of the company, Konami has decided to close down the Los Angeles Studio and a press statement sent to sites such as IGN and Gamespot, further elaborates their decision.

“KONAMI has made the decision to close its Los Angeles Studio, effective immediately, due to the product development resources being restructure into a more centralized unit. This facility contributed to the recent METAL GEAR SOLID games. KONAMI will continue its operations to support all METAL GEAR SOLID titles, including the recently launched METAL GEAR SOLID V: The Phantom Pain and METAL GEAR ONLINE. METAL GEAR ONLINE is still scheduled to release for PC Steam in January 2016.”

The studio closure reportedly has claimed “over 20 jobs” at least, which is close to what George Broussard has claimed in his tweet. A look at the career section at Konami’s official site lists new openings for “Senior Gameplay Programmer” and “Senior Multiplayer Designer,” while the career section for Konami Los Angeles Studio has been removed.

With the fact that Kojima’s Non-Compete Clause expected to end by December and no confirmation on whether he will continue to work on the Metal Gear series, the closure of the Konami Los Angeles Studio is the final nail in the coffin for Kojima’s involvement with Konami. A Konami representative mentioned that moving forward, the Metal Gear series might be developed by other studios and could live on beyond the involvement of series creator Hideo Kojima.

We wish the best to all that was affected by the closure of Konami’s Los Angeles Studio. As for Metal Gear, let’s hope that Konami does intend to make a new Metal Gear in the future. If not, we can always go back to Hideo Kojima’s last masterpiece, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.
