Miitomo Is Nintendo’s First Foray Into Mobile Gaming

When Nintendo announced it’s intention to enter the mobile phone market by partnering with DeNA—a smartphone gaming known for popular mobile games such as Star Wars Galactic Defense and Blood Brothers 2, fans and industry experts were curious as to what Nintendo can bring to the mobile gaming space.

Well, They have finally announced the first Nintendo title that will be making its way to mobile phones, but it’s not quite what most fans were expecting.

Nintendo Miitomo

Introducing Miitomo, a free-to-play app that lets you create your own Mii—avatars that players can create on Nintendo devices such as the Wii U and 3DS. Rather than a game per say, Miitomo too looks to be more like a social app that seems to take advantage of the SreetPass function that Nintendo devices are known for.

Once you’ve created your character in Miitomo, the avatar will stay in your device, sort of like a virtual pet, which you can use to communicate or meet with other avatars either through StreetPass or by the app pairing you to other Miis that share the same interest with you.  Of course, as with Nintendo stance on privacy, any information about you or your avatar will only be shared by people who are registered within your friends list.

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima further elaborated, “Another unique characteristic of Miitomo is that you may be able to find out unknown aspects about your friends or unexpected commonalities you share with your friend because Miitomo may pick up the topics that you usually do not discuss but would be willing to answer is asked.” He continued, “What we would like to realise is, through such communication, you will be able to deepen friendly relationships and have more people with whom you can play games.”

At the moment, a release window has been given for Miitomo, which puts its launch somewhere in March 2016. The good news is that it will come to both iOS and Android at the same time. No word on whether Nintendo plans to bring it to Windows phones, unfortunately.
