Occulus Rift Is Here And It Is $600

The Oculus Rift is finally available for pre-order and it will only cost you a measly $600. That’s right, the VR peripheral that’s been the talk of gaming and tech enthusiasts can finally get their hands on the VR device and will only cost them as much as a new desktop. .

If that price feels a bit steep to you, don’t worry, you’re not the only one. Plenty of people are voicing out their displeasure with the pricing over on Palmer Luckey’s twitter account. And for some, their reasons for being upset (to put it kindly) is quite justifiable, however, Luckey gave us a convincing reason for the price when he tweeted out the following:

Those that have experienced the Oculus Rift can attest that the device is the real deal when it comes to bringing VR to the masses. In normal circumstances, a VR experience similar to the Oculus Rift could cost up to thousands, but Luckey and company have managed to not only put the VR headset for $599, it will also include a Xbox One controller, an Oculus Remote, and two free games, EVE: Valkyrie and Lucky’s Tale.

Over on Oculus’ official blog, they have iterated that 2016 will see more games coming to the Oculus Rift. With games such as Rockband VR by Harmonix, Edge of Nowhere by Insomniac, The Climb by Crytek, plus 20 games from Oculus Studio, means that gamers will have quite the choice for gaming when the Oculus Rift has finally shipped.

But is all that worth the initial $599 investment for the Oculus Rift? Because, not only do you need to fork up $599 for the headset, you’ll also need a computer rig that’s capable of handling the device itself. If you’re unsure of what the specification are for running the Oculus Rift, here’s the breakdown:

Graphics Card: Nvidia GTX 970 / AMD R9 290 equivalent or greater
Processor: Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
Memory: 8GB+ RAM
Output: Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output
Input: 3x USB 3.0 port plus 1x USB 2.0 port
Operating System: Windows 7 SP1 64 bit or newer

If your PC rig is not up to par with the Oculus Rift’s demands, you can purchase an Oculus Ready PC from Oculus themselves, that’s certified and tested by them to provide the best experience with the Rift. The drawback? The PC rig plus the Oculus Rift will cost you $1499 when it becomes available for pre-order in February.

Adding all this up and investing in VR is shaping up to be quite an expensive hobby. At this rate, the ones that will be picking up the Oculus Rift will be the early adopters that are willing to part with that amount of cash. Unless, you were a $275 tier Kickstarter backer, in which case you’ll receive the “Kickstarter Edition” headset package instead.
