Pico Cassette
As video games become increasingly mobile, some things get lost in that transition. To bring back the nostalgia feeling of “what video games is all about?”, Beatrobo have introduced the Pico Cassette to fuel your nostalgia for retro video games at the recent Tokyo Game Show. It’s a tiny video game cartridge that looks like a smaller version of those cartridges from the Nintendo Famicom from the 1980s, that plugs into your smartphone’s headphone jack
During an interview with CEO Hiroshi Asaeda on the Verge, he mentioned that these cartridges are meant to re-instill that “same sense of ownership” that gamers had with an SNES cartridge. However, unlike those game cartridges of yours, Pico Cassettes do not store any software themselves. Instead, they send out inaudible sound to act as authentication keys for an app that you have to download and can then play.
The players are able to save game progress and pick up where they left off on multiple devices by using the cartridge.

As of now, Beatrobo only has a proof of concept cartridge that lets you play a Flappy Bird knockoff. However, the company is working to land content partnerships and will launch a crowdfunding campaign to bring Pico Cassette to the market soon.
Stay tuned for more updates.
