Psychonauts 2 Campaign Reached Its $3.3 Million Goal

Psychonauts 2, the quirky platformer by the creative people of Double Fine Productions, has reached its crowdfunding campaign goal on Fig, raising a respectable $3.5 million as of this writing. Fans of the cult classic can look forward to the game sometime in 2018.

Based on the exclusive title from Playstation 2, Psychonauts 2 is the direct sequel to Psychonauts, a charming and witty platforming game with a unique cast of characters and exceptional writing. The main character, Razputin—Raz, as he’s normally called— underwent training in a Psychonauts camp to learn psychic powers such as telekinesis, levitation, invisibility, and pyrokinesis. In the game, Raz had to delve into the minds of his fellow campers to save them from the psychological stress that they suffer using all the psychic powers he learned.

In the sequel, players will once again take control of Raz as he and his team take on the minds of fellow Psychonauts who experience psychological issues and help them overcome it. While the plot details are scarce are at the moment, fans can expect the trademark Double Fine humor and imagination in the game.

The campaign for Psychonauts 2’s funding was announced during The Game Awards 2015 and is hosted on a new crowdfunding site, Fig. While Double Fine managed to gain great success on Kickstarter with Broken Age, Tim Schafer and company felt that Fig’s investors portion will give them more drive and be more transparent with the development of Psychonauts 2.

In an interview with the Verge, Tim Schafer elaborated more on Double Fine’s standing with Fig:

“With rewards-based crowdfunding, we only really had to show [backers] creatively what we’re doing,” said Tim Schafer. “Now that we have investors, we’re going to be transparent about talking about our business plan, too. I think people are going to want to know how we plan to make money from this game. Before they weren’t interested in that; they wanted the game to be successful, but they weren’t asking questions about profitability, and now they will be.”

Besides working on Psychonauts 2, it was also announced on December that a virtual reality spinoff, Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, will be developed for Playstation VR. The spinoff is set to take place in between Psychonauts and Psychonauts 2. Psychonauts 2 is expected for launch on 2018 and will come to Playstation 4, Xbox One, Windows, Mac, and Linux.
