Saints Row: Gat out of Hell

If you’re looking for an action-adventure game with a little bit of comedy, then the Saints Row: Gat out of Hell game is for you. This 2015 game is a result of the collaboration of three companies – publisher Deep Silver and developers High Voltage Software and Volition.

It’s an expansion game of the cult favorite Saints Row IV. It’s a standalone expansion, though, so you can play this expansion even if you don’t have Saints Row IV.

The game is getting mixed reviews. While some fans love the comedic twist, some die-hard fans are not happy with how the game turned out. Will you be happy or disappointed? This review will give you a good idea.

Game Description

Saints Row: Gat out of Hell is played in an open world environment named New Hades. This new city is made up of five islands namely Barrens, Shantytown, Forge, Den and Downtown.

As the player, you get to choose between two characters – Kinzie Kensington or Johnny Gat.

You’ll control the player as a third-person shooter as you navigate your way around the open world city. In this city, you can expect to be challenged with quests and minor objectives. You will also encounter a lot of collectibles.

You can also utilize the superhuman abilities that are making a comeback from Saints Row IV. You can even play with wings thanks to the angelic flight ability.
The plot is pretty straightforward.

The Saints’ leader is held capture by Satan himself with the intention of marrying him to Jezebel who happens to be his daughter. In order to save the leader, the game’s main characters, Kinzie Kensington and Johnny Gat, follow them into Hell.

They’re expected to stop Satan with the help of their former enemies who now call Hell their home. Past Saints are expected to help as well.

In order to progress through the game, you need to fill the “Satan’s Wrath” meter by completing challenges and activities.

Here are some good reasons why you should get this game:

  • It’s a standalone expansion game. This means that you don’t need to have Saints Row IV in order to play this game.
  • New Hades, the setting of the game, is a refreshing and entertaining setting. It’s also more refined as compared to the previous setting.
  • There’s a new cast of characters so you don’t feel as if you’re basically playing the same game as Saints Row IV when playing Saints Row: Gat out of Hell.
  • The superhuman abilities are fun to play with, especially the angelic flight ability.
  • It’s a good game to play if you’re just looking for a short break from your responsibilities.
  • The side challenges and activities keep the players guessing. They make the game more entertaining.
  • The dialogues are funny and well-thought of.

As you can see, Saints Row: Gat out of Hell features a lot of great things. Looking at this list of pros alone, it’s safe to say that you should at least give this game a try to see if you’ll like it as well.

Just like all games, this game is not perfect. It has its own share of cons. Here are some of them:

  • It’s a short game. A lot of players had that, “that’s it?” moment after finishing the game in a short time.
  • You get the feeling that this game has no real agenda. This is probably because of its lack of conventional story missions.
  • The graphics are not that impressive.
  • The game has a lot of bugs.
  • Sometimes, you forget that you’re playing Saints Row: Gat out of Hell and feel that you’re playing Saints Row IV. They have some similarities with their mission types. Some superhuman abilities are also very similar except for the angelic flight which is a new introduction.
  • The combat and fighting system leaves a lot to be desired.

It’s not that creative of a game. This is especially true if you’re going to compare it to the previous two Saints games.

Compare the Saints Row: Gat out of Hell with the other two Saints games at your own risk. Some people will feel that it’s a good expansion pack, while some people will feel that it’s not because of its lack of creativity as compared to the two games.

This is consistent with the mixed reviews that it’s been getting. It’s been getting a lot of positive reviews but it’s been getting a lot of negative reviews as well.

If you’re a fan of the Saints Row franchise, this expansion pack is a must-play. Its angelic flight feature is something that you have to experience for yourself.

While the other superhuman abilities are simply rehashed from the previous games, this addition makes it worth a try. The comedic twist is not for everyone.

If you find witty dialogues entertaining, then you’ll find this twist entertaining. But just as a warning, a lot of the die-hard fans of Saints Row are not really fans of the comedic twist.

But either way, this is something that you have to see for yourself to see if you’ll be playing with a chuckle or with a roll of your eyes.

This game relies heavily on its open world setting because there are no traditional missions. The open world setting determines if you’re going to enjoy the game or not.

If you enjoy playing this type of setting, then you’ll enjoy the game. If you prefer following traditional missions, then you’ll find the lack of agenda a little troubling.

Again, reviews are mixed so it’s pretty hard to provide a clear verdict. However, the angelic flight feature makes this game a must-try. Try this game for the sake of trying this superhuman ability.

The freedom that you’ll get out of using this feature is exceptional. It’s also a challenge in itself as you need to maintain your momentum.

So feel free to give the Saints Row: Gat out of Hell game a try.
